Training and Education

The dual education system is a method of vocational training. Training in the dual system takes place at two learning locations: the company and the vocational school, characterized by cross-location learning processes (dual learning). Individuals in dual training are referred to as trainees.

A prerequisite for vocational training in the dual system in Germany is a vocational training contract with a company. The vocational school that the trainees must attend depends on the location or regional affiliation of the company. The largest practical part of the training is provided to the trainees in the companies, while the theoretical part is predominantly handled by the vocational school. The cooperation between the training locations—between company trainers and educators at vocational schools—is of particular importance for the quality of training. Furthermore, it is also possible at many vocational schools to acquire additional qualifications.

Attendance at a vocational school (school with a vocational qualification) ensures that the dual training consists of general education/theoretical instruction and practical workshop instruction.

The connection between theory and practice is the internationally valued and successful model of dual training in Germany. The comparatively low youth unemployment rate in Germany can also be attributed to this system. One million young people are learning in state-recognized vocational professions in Germany, with 324 professions expected in 2022. In 2021, around 467,000 people will have concluded a new training contract in the dual system.

The German government and the relevant authorities promote dual training and ensure its quality. The Chambers of Industry and Commerce advise the training companies, conduct examinations, and set standards. Trade unions and employer associations negotiate salaries and establish training standards. The state finances and oversees the vocational school system, supports young people in their search for training, and promotes disadvantaged youth.
